Tomorrow is the last day for Track Club. Mañana es la última reunion del Club de Atletismo.

Tomorrow is the last day for Track Club.

Hopefully the weather will hold and allow for us to have our last meeting on the track.
However, if the weather does not cooperate, we will be meeting in the annex gym until 3:00.

We would like to see the track kids one more time, give them words of celebration and pass out any ribbons that have been earned.  But this will not take very long, hence the 3:00 ending (100 kids in the annex gym will be a bit tight!).

Either way we will see your kids tomorrow.  My fingers are crossed that it will be on the track!
We will email you by noon (or before) if we have decided to move it to the annex gym.

Track Club Updates

1.  There will not be Track Club this Friday.  :(
Ms. Palmer, Dr. Mitchell, and Ms. Underwood will not be on campus Friday afternoon.

2.  The last track Club for the year will be on Friday, May 8.
As the temperature gets hotter and hotter, we realize that it is time to shut the track down on Fridays.

3.  With that said, please check with your child to be sure that s/he still wants to come out and walk/jog/run on Fridays.  As the temperature rises, the enthusiasm for some lessens.  If they are no longer interested, PLEASE do not make them come out.  If on the other hand, they are in it until the end, be sure to pack an extra (frozen?) water bottle.  They do get soooo hot out there!

4.  Thank you for your prompt pick ups lately!  I have enjoyed getting out of  here well before 4:00!

Registration Open for Free Rodeo Rumble

 TUESDAY, JANUARY 20, 2015

Want to enjoy a free morning at Rodeo Austin?  Sign your kid up to participate in the Rodeo Rumble Kid's 1K Fun Run on Saturday, March 14, 2015.

Rodeo Rumble is a free event for children ages 12 and under. Held in Luedecke Arena the first Saturday of the Fair and Rodeo, Rodeo Rumble offers kids the chance to race on the dirt where the cowboys and cowgirls will compete each evening. Runners will receive a custom back number for the race and cowbell for finishing the course.

The 2015 Rodeo Rumble will be held on Saturday, March 14th. Registration opens at 9:00 a.m. and the first heat of runners takes off at 9:30 a.m. Register your child here.

My boys ran in the Rodeo Rumble last year and then we stuck around to explore Rodeo Austin. The kids visited livestock, spent some time in the Kidstown petting zoo, watched pig races, and rode around the pedal tractor maze. All free!  As a heads up, though, the carnival opens at 11 a.m. on March 14 and those rides are not free.

Another opportunity to visit Rodeo Austin for free is through the School Tours Program. You may also be interested in the free Cowboy Breakfast at the Long Center that will kick off Rodeo Austin on March 6, 2015 at 6 a.m.

IMG_2987Our Do512 Family Content Manager has taken her three boys for the past several years, and they look forward to it every year. Besides showing off your fast feet in the race, kids also get the chance to meet Rodeo Austin’s costumed characters. And if you stick around after the races, you can explore the Kids Town section of the grounds to check out the petting zoo and more.
It’s a lot of fun!

Track Club Info.

There are a couple of things to touch base on:

1.  Thank you for picking up your child(ren) on time.  All students have been picked up in a timely manner and I really appreciate that!  One request though, if your child is going to go home with another family, please send a note letting us know.  Please send the note addressed to Mrs. Palmer, Track Club.

2.  Remember to check with your child periodically to be sure s/he is still interested in being a part of Track Club.  Students that stay after school with us are expected to be on the track, not on the playscape or playing else where.  Remember: this is a come when you can type of club.  If your child wants to take a break for a while, it is OK.

Thank you for letting your child be a part of OHE Track Club!

ATTN Track Club Parents: I need your help!!

1. We need more parents on the track!

Now that our enrollment is close to 200 students, it is getting harder for me to ensure the safety and on-task behavior of our crew!

If you are willing, I would love to have 5-10 additional adults walking the track helping monitor.*
Please let me know if you are able to come and we can meet on Friday at 2:30 and make a plan.
(kristen.palmer@austinisd.org)

*If we have 5-10 adults, it will not be a problem when someone can not make it on a Friday.
This does not have to be an EVERY Friday commitment, but a "most of the time" commitment.

2.  We need to stress the importance of honesty and integrity on the track!

It has come to our attention that several/many students are not being honest regarding the number of laps that are run.  There are a variety of ways that they are working the system.  We are putting systems in place to put a stop to the cheating the system, but we can use your help.

When talking to your child about their running accomplishments, be sure to focus on the hard work and the fitness/endurance that is needed or is being improved upon.  Try not to focus just on the number of laps that are run.  And if the number seems unusually high, ask a few questions before automatically praising.  Unfortunately, the students who have been cheating the system are sharing their tactics with their friends.

3. Thank you for encouraging your child to enjoy walk/jog/running!

It is so fun to see this many kids staying after school on a Friday afternoon, just to be on the track!  If you have not come out and checked out this experience, you really should!  I think you will enjoy it!!  Maybe I'll see you out there THIS week.  The weather is supposed to be nice, mostly sunny with a high of 64...great weather for being out on the track!!

As always, contact me if you have any questions, comments, or concerns.  Thanks again.  Kristen
